Sri Sowmyakeshava Temple

Shantigrama is a village at a distance of 12kms from Hassan town along Bangalore-Hassan National Highway. The village is a gift to Natyarani Shantaladevi from Vishnuvardhana. Sri Sowmyakeshava Temple is a State Protected Monument, Department of State Archeology. From inscriptions it appears that the temple was built in 14th century AD by Shantala Devi, the chief queen of the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in Hoysala style could be dated to Vijayanagara period. The gopura and entrance mantapa resembles Vijayanagara dynasty. The temple was restored during 2006-08. During restoration the outer walls of the temple were completely dismantled, separated, cleaned and reconstructed after strengthening jagati. Shikara over garbhagriha was re-built in old style of architecture. Daily pooja is being performed in this temple.
